The Leo House is in its 117th year as a safe, quiet guesthouse with a Catholic atmosphere. This residency is staffed by a Priest-in-Residence, the Sisters of St. Agnes and lay personnel. There is a chapel with the Blessed Sacrament reserved, and often daily Mass. People of all faiths are welcome.
Our residency provides general hospitality, rather than accommodations specifically for retreats, with moderately decorated and comfortable rooms. We offer single and double rooms with private or shared baths ranging from $70-100. Family rooms with 4-6 beds are also available for $160. A beautiful outdoor garden is available for all guests to relax and enjoy its beauty.
There is NO SMOKING in any room in The Leo House, except for the garden.
A buffet style breakfast is served every day except Sunday in a pleasant Dining Room. The Commons Room has vending machines providing soft drinks and snacks. There are a wide variety of restaurants just outside our doors offering popular dinner and luncheon cuisines at reasonable prices.
Centrally located in Manhattan, the Chelsea residential area provides public transportation to the many tourist attractions (Museums, Theatres, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center, Rockefeller Center, St Patrick’s Cathedral and Fifth Ave shopping) and is well within a half block via subway or bus. Several churches are within walking distance.

| Denis W | 5/5/2008 7:58:58 PM | | Without a doubt the best bargain hotel in lower Manhattan. The location is great, within easy walking distance to the Metro, Midtown and the Village. I've stayed there several times over the past 10 years. W23rd is a busy cross street so ask for a room in the rear, but requesting one is not a guarantee that you’ll get one. I have had mixed results with accommodations and the staff. Most staff are friendly and professional. But twice they have messed up my reservations, one time losing it completely. Be certain to get a reservation number after you’ve faxed in your request and be certain to confirm your reservation prior to arrival even if they claim you don’t need to confirm. The breakfast room is handy, a bargain, and well staffed. Rooms have been a mix of clean and neat to dingy and in need of a serious scrubbing, slow drains are common. They were renovating the building piecemeal a few years ago, it may be done by now. As long as you are not looking for luxurious accommodations then this is a great place to stay. | | Kelly Hunter | 5/2/2008 6:23:07 PM | | My mother and I stayed here in May 2007 and aside from the hard beds, it was a very clean and safe feeling place.
It is in a great Chelsea location to the subway and bakeries.
The breakfast is unbelievably good and a great price.
We would definitely stay here again the next time we come back to NY. The price was $100 per night for two twin beds and a private bath. The room was small but who cares when it's the city to see, not the hotel room. | | sarah fiodorova | 3/19/2008 8:15:25 AM | | I first stayed at Leo House in 2002. Me and my mum were impressed with its cleanliness, and also with the price!
When I returned to NYC in 2005 i made sure that i booked to stay at Leo House. Again, very clean and a very good price.
I would always recommend Leo House to visitors to NYC. | | Cheryl Carroll | 3/7/2008 5:04:04 AM | | We stayed at Leo House in March 2002 with our youth group. It was the perfect place to take a youth group as far as price and very centrally located. The rooms are just what you need at the end of the day to rest your weary bones. Very close to the subway and walking distance to Broadway. I highly recommend it for Youth Groups. | | Mary I | 2/14/2008 7:43:19 AM | | The Leo House staff is wonderful. I had cancer treatments in NYC several years ago and stayed there for two nights a week for 24 weeks. I continue to get check ups twice a year and always stay at the Leo House. The staff, particularly Lucy is so accomodating and compassionate. Very clean no frills environment and they have a particular fee schedule if a person is receiving medical treatment in NYC. Down the street are two great Spanish restaurants(one which serves lobsters in all sizes.)
There are two cinemas, one right across the stree from Leo House. The breakfast buffet is great(homemade muffins, quiche and all kinds of fruit in addition to the regular breakfast fare. It is open to the public, too. Very secure place in Chelsea. right next to the C train, too. | | Nancy C. | 1/21/2008 10:20:06 AM | | I have family members that always stay there. I have lived in NY all my life but moved to FL in 2003. When I needed to come up north I stayed at the Leo House. It is a very safe place. Once it gets passed a certain time in the PM they have the doors locked and you have to ring the bell to get in. The food was great and the price was low. You can walk to Greenwich Village or midtown. As long as you don't want luxury this is the place to go. Also know that they only have window air conditioners so if you are a light sleeper just know it is a little noisy. | | Donna Hull | 1/5/2008 1:30:11 PM | | When I was 16 a group of my classmates and I stayed at The Leo House while visiting from St.Lambert on the South Shore of Montreal. For many of us, this was our first time visiting New York. We felt safe, sheltered and protected. There is a something very special about The Leo House that has stayed with me over the years. I would recommend it wholeheartedly as a gracious, comfortable retreat. | | Bonnie Bright | 12/30/2007 5:29:14 PM | | This is the safest, most comfortable and easy place to stay in the city. Hospitable and personal. Highly recommended to all. | | Caroline | 11/19/2007 7:01:38 AM | | I only had the opportunity to stay at the Leo House one time several years ago, but it was an unforgettable experience. What I loved was the breakfast, (seems everyone has praise for it!), the opportunity to attend Mass, and the SECURITY. I remember that I could not even get inside the lobby after dark unless I had a room key, and my son was not allowed to come up to my room; I was called and asked to meet him in the lobby. I am hoping to stay again in 2008, but I am sad that the rates have gone up as much as they have. However, it is still a lot less expensive than any place else in NYC. | | Jose F. Colon | 11/3/2007 1:40:29 PM | | Many years ago I stayed at Leo House with my aunt Panchita who passed away in 2002. Going back will undoubtedly bring back beautiful memories of the kindness and overall ambiance in the hospice. As a Catholic I thank Saint Martin of Porres, who died in a day like today for openning my mind and inspiring me to go back to this blessed place again. | | Wendy Wood | 10/11/2007 11:43:46 AM | | I have stayed at the Leo House several times over the years and it is amazing. You can't believe a place like this exists anymore!!! So old-fashion and the breakfast buffet is yummy and so reasonable. You won't regret this cozy inn. | | Mark Bakermans | 5/14/2007 2:17:28 AM | | This is a great alternative to expensive New York hotels. The Leo House has friendly staff, great breakfast buffet (at $7), and clean and comfortable rooms. Sharing a shower located in the hallway proved to be no problem. The rooms have a sink and toilet. Ideally situated in Chelsea, just 200 meters from a MTA station. We were there for seven nights and can thoroughly recommend Leo House. Thanks to the staff and sisters for their great welcome and hospitality. | | Michelle | 4/24/2007 11:46:34 AM | | We heard about The Leo House through the parish priest. My three sisters and our Mother went to NYC to see our son/nephew/grandson's debut on Broadway and celebrate our Mother's 90th birthday.
We found The Leo House to be delightful and as neat as a pin. The staff was very courteous and concerned about our stay and well being. The brunch they offer for a nominal fee was beyond our imagination, you have to try the cinnamon rolls for sure.
Thanks to The Leo House our trip was affordable and terrific.
We would go back again and again and again. | | Peter J. F. | 4/12/2007 12:10:42 PM | | Leo House deserves a high rating, not for its exquisite accommodations, but rather for their charm, cleanliness, friendliness, and it's central location. The rooms are quaint and basic - with private baths, they are dated and frayed round the edges though. I highly recommend a room with private bath facilities - a real step back in time though. Rooms are available with shared bathing facilities - located in the halls.
Breakfast is served daily except Sundays. It is fresh, varied and plentiful - staff are attentive and friendly. A real steal at $7. seconds are encouraged and there is more than enough food.
Leo House is centrally located(8th & W23rd) in Chelsea. They are situated close to local restaurants, bars, night clubs, museums, and public transportation (1/2 block to subway). Further afield, they are walking distance to many other attractions: Hell's Kitchen, Greenwich Village, Hudson River and Washington Square.
Leo House is definitely a quiet retreat - a real find you will never forget; and that is their charm. | | Maureen Cheetham-Highsmith | 3/28/2007 5:21:44 AM | | We stayed here by default in 2002.I have posted a review on Tripadvisor so won't go into detail again here, suffice is to say that The Leo House is NYC's best kept secret and I'm happy for it to stay thay way!!! | | Bob Stempin | 2/19/2007 5:08:43 PM | | I've stayed at The Leo House many times during the past several years. The staff and accomodations are top notch. The rooms are small but clean and inviting. The breakfast is not to be missed. It is like eating in your Grandmother's dining room. I can't say enough about the nice people who run The Leo House. God bless you! | | Bill Berensmann | 2/10/2007 4:44:21 PM | | What a pleasure to discover that The Leo House continues to accommodate visitors to NYC. I stayed here every week for years over five years ago, and never had a negative experience. Rooms were always spotless, staff extremely courteous (especially the sister who operated the elevator),
and the value was unbeatable. Hope to return again soon.
| | Scott a. howe | 1/17/2007 10:32:02 AM | | I thought this place was top notch! All the staff was professional, polite, and friendly. Very helpfull! The place was kept very clean and tidy!! Great breakfast buffet every day. I couldn't have stayed at a better place if I looked for months. It has a beautiful patio garden in the back yard, that's quiet, and secluded. Great place | | Anne Pasternak | 9/24/2006 | | My daughter and I stayed at Leo House for 4 days. If I could rate the breakfast on its own, I would give it a 10! The pleasant woman who were behind the buffet, hot porridge just the right consistancy, always some fresh fruit and yorgurt to top it off. I tried to resist it, but I finally succumbed to a slice of a delicious brown raisin & nut loaf. The coffee was hot and delicious. The small room with white table cloths is charming and everyone seemed to be in a happy mood. What a way to start the day.
The rooms were kept spotless. The staff were indeed very helpful, helping us in many ways, the quickest way to get to where we wanted to go.
I was not overly excited about the shower being down the hall. At that time the water was not going down the drain fast enough, and it pooled around my feet. I should have reported it - but did not. I survived.
Nevertheless, I would return to Leo House if we go back to New York.
Sincerely, Anne | | Phyllis Covington | 6/18/2006 | | I have stayed at the Leo House twice over the years. Your description here fits nicely. I remember the clean rooms and the bath down the hall which was shared. I felt safe there and got fed well in the dining room for breakfast. I enjoyed paying in 1989 less than $50 for my room with two twin beds.I still tell people about the Leo House for an inexpensive place in Manhattan. |
