While you may be familiar with summer camp and its days full of sports activities, crafts and sleeping in bunkhouses with your new ten best friends, there is another option that is just as engaging but also focuses on personal development and self awareness- the teen retreat.
Retreats offer similar activities like hiking and canoeing but also include very different activities like working in the organic garden or helping in the kitchen. Most importantly are interspersed with time for journaling and dialoging about emotions as well as training in meditation. Thus the retreat is unique in that the teen is also given tools to help cope with stress and combat peer pressure not just through heightened self confidence but also through a deeper self-knowing, a stronger internal compass.
Retreats will often be shorter, averaging four days, while camps are usually one or two weeks. Retreat costs vary widely from $135 for four days at a spiritual retreat center to $2000 for two weeks at a high end retreat and spa. Many retreat centers offer teen retreats as a separate event while some have a simultaneous retreat for adults; others have a family retreat or an annual gathering with a track for teens.
