This retreat is designed to offer a practical introduction to mindfulness meditation for lawyers. Lawyers live in a frenzied world of words, confrontation and action. We are heavily trained in analytical skills. The sources of our knowledge are external: statutes, regulations and written opinions. We are focused on achieving results. The pressures and stresses of practicing our profession are legendary.
Mindfulness meditation is a radical training, practice and skill building experience for lawyers. It is a path of self-knowledge that is ancient in origin, yet modern and universal in its secular applications. Mindfulness cultivates and develops the critical faculty of awareness. It is extraordinary in its simplicity, its lack of dogma and, above all, its results.
Mindfulness meditation instruction has been offered in recent years to physicians and health care professionals, professional athletes and teams (Chicago Bulls and L.A. Lakers), major corporations, law firms and law schools. The participants of such trainings have experienced marked improvement in concentration, listening and interpersonal skills, clarity of thinking, creativity and patience. Mindfulness training empowers lawyers to cope better with burnout and the stress of our work and profession. We develop better management and leadership skills, act more compassionately and we are more effective.
