To the reviewer, Vicky. Thank you for your posting. Upon reading the other posts and seeing The Leo House in my church bulletin, I was about to make inquiry for a stay. It is unfortunate but your posting reads true and I am disappointed that the rebuttal from Leo House seemed more to call you a liar then take responsibility. Mistakes do happen but publically acknowledging them goes along way toward mending the problems. Perhaps you would wish to write to the Archdiocese about your experience. And for the price, Craigslist has many apartments that one can stay in when visiting NY.

I have stayed at Leo House numerous times since 2000 and consider it my "home away from home." What a wonderful place! Remember--Leo House is NOT a hotel. It is a traveler's guest house run as a ministry! The accommodations are indeed simple and spartan, but the rooms are clean and the staff quite competent. The breakfast is wonderful. I usually describe Leo House as like a European boutique hotel. Regarding reservations, the demand is so great for accommodations, that it is sometimes difficult to get exactly the type of room one needs for the length of time one needs it. The staff has always worked very hard to accommodate my needs--making sure we don't have to switch rooms during our stay. The Leo House is a gem in NYC!

Having read the review from "Vicki" below, I feel I must respond. I have stayed at the Leo House between 8-10 times (I have lost count), and have never had a problem. The place is managed very well, the staff are courteous and accommodating, and the morning breakfasts are fantastic. The rooms are small and spartan, but that's part of the charm and is why The Leo House is able to keep the costs low for its guests. During one or two of my visits, I had to switch rooms, and the front desk staff were very helpful on the days I had to make the switch.
I do wish there was an easier way to make reservations other than by fax, and I think the time for the Leo House to have a web site is long, long overdue. That said, I have no hesitation recommending The Leo House to anyone looking for affordable and comfortable accommodations in NYC. It is close to the A and E trains as well.

I have been staying at the Leo House since 1975. The staff has always been wonderful and I count my self blessed to have met the sisters there who always made me feel welcome. I have many warm memories of my stays. My family and friends stay there when they return to the city and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting NYC. God bless all of the staff there. If your score went higher than 5 I would give you a 10

To the blogger Vicki who placed such numerous, untrue and negative information about your recent contact with The Leo House staff, the management would like to say that for over a week, our staff, including myself as the Executive Director, believe we tried in every possible way to accommodate your last minute changing needs, but that did not seem possible. In your best interest, we as a Christian organization could not consider having you spend your money and in the end be so unsatisfied with our accommodations. Since there are many other places in Manhattan that you could stay, we thought it best to cancel your reservations. For over 120 years we have been providing Christian hospitality to our guests from around the world, and our database of 15,000 plus guests include many repeat customers, so we believe that we do provide good service. The fact that we do provide good and courteous service is witnessed by the many other positive comments about us on this and other websites. To all our past and future guests, please consider staying with us based upon the many repeat guests who have been satisfied with our service over the last 120 years and make your own assessment of The Leo House.

Be wary of The Leo House of New York. It is truly mismanaged with staff running the organization and hotel management either being kept from what is going on or not caring. Two weeks ago I made a reservation to stay for 10 days. I called a day after I made the reservation to inquire if I could add another day and was informed the reservation I made for two people was only made for one on the 5 of the 10 days and they had nothing available. I tried to get resolution and this has taken almost 8 days of no return phone calls from the reservation manager, no email confirmations when she told me I would receive them, when I insisted I get an email confirmation the dates were wrong, I kept making long distance calls explaining the incorrect dates, but 7 email confirmations later the dates were still wrong, I was told numerous times to leave messages for the reservation manager, but her phone mailbox was always full. I tried to speak with the Executive Director of the hotel to explain I have booked two non-refundable airline tickets after I thought I had my Leo House reservation ($1,000) but his secretary refused to take a message when she knew it was a complaint. Really really fed-up today I called reservations again and became so frustrated when a reservationist told me I was making a nuisance of myself, she kept interrupting me when I told her what I needed, and she hung up the phone on me. The Reservation Manager calls me within minutes of me being hung up on and tells me I have to apologize to staff or she is canceling my reservation. And she did it. She sent me an email, FINALLY with my correct arrival and departure dates, states I was rude and shouting and I am not welcome. Her email is full of grammatical errors and misspellings. If you've ever had an out-of-body experience you know exactly how I felt reading her email.
I just pulled up some reviews of The Leo House and I see that another would be guest from Virginia had a very similar problem with reservations just two months ago. He stated reservation personnel were rude to him and told him all the things they couldn't do for him, instead of all the things they could do to accommodate. I also got a lot of this verbiage from the reservations staff.
I have stayed at The Leo House on two separate occasions. One time for an extended time during the summer and most everything went well. At that time we had problems with housekeeping and I guess that is a problem at The Leo House because some of the front desk staff keeps a private stash of towels, soap and other items because hotel guests are frequently coming to them because housekeeping doesn't always make-up rooms correctly.
The second time I stayed at The Leo House I did have a problem with reservations and my daughter and I had to stay in a room we never had reservations for. One of us slept on a cot for two nights. For this stay I really wasn't okay that housekeeping could never get our beds made by 5 pm., when we finally got beds. When I asked the cleaning person on the floor why she didn't make-up our room she told me some crazy story, and when her boss asked her about this story in front of me the cleaning person said she was not telling the truth.
Do yourselves a favor, there are other places in New York City that offer the same prices, have reservations departments that are organized, efficient, well mannered, as opposed to rude and fly-off-the-handle and cancel your reservation because you want some form of confirmation.
