Women, Creativity and the Journey of Soul
September- Italy

Join in a circle of creative women as we explore the many facets of the Feminine, that which is the source of our deep inner knowing. The Feminine is intuition. The Feminine is serene and wild, playful and erotic, passionate and compassionate. She is the Triple Goddess of Maiden, Mother and Crone. She is mystic and she is warrior. She is Woman Unto Herself.

What does Woman Unto Herself mean? Derived from the original definition of "virgin", it signifies a woman complete unto herself, one who was owned by no man.

Such a woman can be in any phase of life, young or old, married or unmarried, mother or childless. What is important is that she experiences life through the private rhythm of her being, a rhythm whose source is the Mystery that flows through creation. .

This journey into self is the adventure of the retreat. Through a variety of means including writing, ritual, myth, movement and meditation, we will explore and embrace the experience of Woman Unto Herself. .

We will be staying at Il Grande Prato, a restored farmhouse in the extraordinary landscape of the Tuscan hills between Florence and Siena. Fueling our creative fire is fantastic food served three times a day with attention to individual preferences. Local wine is served at lunch and dinner; there is a swimming pool and we will have cooking lessons as well as a guide on one of our two days in Florence. Il Grande Prato has a gym and a hot tub. .

This is the perfect setting for a gathering of women passionate about their creativity. With every need tended to, we will journey to embrace with love that Self for which our heart yearns.

There will be two days of sight-seeing in Florence and, after the retreat, those of us who desire will go on to a four day adventure in Venice!

Music and Consciousness
By Norma Edwards

What is your music IQ? Our ancestors knew that rhythm and music have the power to bring about changes in consciousness and create a bridge to a more creative, intelligent and joy-filled life. Reclaiming this knowledge, I believe, will permit us to set our spirits free.

Most of us use music to relax, as a stimulant. Spiritually we are becoming aware that music may also have the ability to cultivate landscapes of inner harmony. From well loved lullabies and beyond, the rhythm and harmony of music may well have the potential to re-write patterns in the brain.

Deepak Chopra tells us: "The body is held together by sound, the presence of dis-ease indicates that some sounds have gone out of tune." If we even partially accept this idea, then we should be motivated to seek out and use the spiritual tools that will allow music to work for us as medicine.

I invite you to explore with me the possibility that music, medicine and spirituality coexist in a place that transcends space and time and that if we let it, music can become the harmonic data carrier to unlock the doorways to spirituality.

Are you seeking answers to the deeper mysteries of life? If so think of music as a possible tool of transformation. Begin with mindful listening coupled with breathing, relaxation/meditation techniques to open up higher levels of consciousness.

Norma will hold a Music as Medicine Retreat in Jamaica this October

BOOK REVIEW
Unattended Sorrow: Recovering from Loss and Reviving the Heart by Stephen Levine

Rodale, New York, NY, 2005. $23.95.

Not feeling as connected to the world as you once did? Having a bit of trouble remembering how to play or enjoy the sunlight? When left unattended, sorrow (whether from everyday losses such as broken trust, words spoken that cannot be retrieved, and lost opportunities to the monumental losses of a job or the life of a loved one) accumulates and diminishes the flow of our life force "like a low grade fever." Each unresolved loss, no matter the size, piles onto the one before. When a loss occurs, the pain flows not only from the immediate loss, but also from all the previous losses. Such is the case when you stub a toe and suddenly find yourself grieving the loss of your childhood pet. Instead of instructing you to simply 'send love into the pain' (an ineffective technique when you can't remember how to love or are so numb you can't locate the pain), Stephen Levine gently guides you to turn toward the pain in order to "unearth the heart that has room for it all." Expertly leading you though exercises based in body awareness, Levine begins by inviting you back into your body through gently becoming aware of your belly and sensing your breathing. He then slowly ramps up to witnessing your thoughts during meditation to expressing your emotions though journaling to taking days for yourself in order to simply walk and allow your mind to settle, or sing loudly and allow your heart to open. If these techniques sound ridiculous or impossible, they are probably exactly what you need. Steeped heavily in Buddhist thought yet embracing the essence at the heart of all the world's religions, the short chapters of Unattended Sorrow allow you to connect to your grief while not being overwhelmed by it and invite you back chapter after chapter as you gradually peel away the layers of grief allowing your heart to expand once again.
