| Loretta Jean Humphrey | 5/11/2010 | | My experience at The Leo House was very welcoming. It provided exactly what we needed for our stay in New York. It was quiet, and accommodating with the necessities for a few nights stay. The breakfast that is provided you cannot beat. The food was all home made, the breads, fresh pancakes, eggs, sausage, porridge, and fresh fruit, and you could not beat the cooked rhubarb. I would recommend this facility for anyone who wishes a nice quiet relaxed atmosphere, families or if you are alone, The Leo House is the place to stay. |
| Jessica Jacoby | 4/6/2010 | | I have been at the Leo House from the 1st of March to the 11th. If I have given a rating of 2, it is because of the breakfast which was good and the kindness of sister Kathleen, otherwise it would have been lower. Not so much because I had no lamp at my bedside, or I had no cellphone service in my room, or I could not wash my hands properly because the fawcet snapped shut, if I let it go. Those things are unneccesary and annoying, but what really bothered me, was the extreme unhelpfulness, arrogance, patronizing attitude and in one case outright rudeness of the frontdesk ladies. I have stayed in many hotels, guesthouses and B&B's but I have never seen behaviour like that. The longer I stayed, the more pronounced this became. People like that would be better suited as prison wardens than in a guesthouse, where people want to feel welcome! This is why I can not recommand the Leo House. Jessica Jacoby |
| Greg | 3/30/2010 | | My wife and I visit NYC every June for our anniversary and always stay at the Leo House. The rooms are dated but always clean and functional. The beds are well used but comfortable with fresh linen. The staff is always friendly and helpful and even allows us to store our bags in the lobby closet after normal checkout hours. The breakfast buffet is the best bargain in Manhattan and a wholesome start to enjoying all Chelsea has to offer. There are no negatives except that this type of lodging is not for the high maintenance crowd. It is a no frills, safe, clean, comfortable, nice, place to retire after a long day in the city. |
| lhoeting | 3/26/2010 | | leo house is a no frills place to stay...my sister and our children and i found it just right! we stayed all together in a family room and had a ball!
i am dissappointed to learn that they no longer have family rooms...i will have to think twice before i split up my family |
| Anita C Cansler | 3/21/2010 | | My daughter and I stayed at the Leo House March 18th through the 20th and we couldn't have been happier. From the front desk to housekeeping everyone smiled and went out of their way to make our experience a pleasant one. They pay attention to the small things like thick fluffy large towels, internet service, comfortable lounges for relaxing, extra pillows and blankets in the room and extraordinary kindness. The security system made me feel protected, they gave excellent recommendations for dining out and secured our luggage upon arrival allowing us to sight see before our room was ready. The facilities in our room were really clean and although our room was street side, I could not hear the outside noise. There were alot of doors slamming in the hallway starting around 7am but no one can really control that. I just referred to it as my wake up call. There is a drug store across the street that really came in handy and the subway is only a few yards away. I plan to revisit NY and hope that the Leo House remains just as it was when I left...exceptional!! If you need anything, just ask for Gabriel. Anita C. Cansler |
| Bill Brandt | 12/26/2009 | | I stayed there about 4 years ago and am rating it a 5 - the top. For me staying in Manhattan for 5-6 days would have been almost impossible if it weren't for the Leo House.
I stayed in a single for about $80/night - the furnishings were old, paint peeling in a few places but it was clean and you couldn't ask for a better location in Manhattan.
The nuns would fix breakfast - and bake their own bread and for a paltry $6 you could have breakfast.
A subway stop was out the door - to the right maybe 200 feet.
It is a nice clean hotel in an area where rooms are 3-5 times (and more) as much. |
| soula chreim | 11/16/2009 | | the leo house is a great and safe place to go to when u are in Manhatan.everybody is nice there .Maryline ,Roge, and the managere Lucy is also a great and professionel personne.well i went for a intense to a big photographer and feelt so alone at the big city at the begining, far from home familly, friends ex .but as the seconde day went bay i forget that i was so far because the feeling that i had in Leo house is great ,and the litle Church there is so beautiful.... tx u once again to all the crew many kisses soula from Lebanon! |
| Rose Hanley | 10/2/2009 | | I stayed there in Sept. 2009 with my 10 year old daughter. We really enjoyed it. We felt quite safe there. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The staff are what make it a such a pleasant place to stay. The rooms were clean, but well worn and could use some paint and the bathrooms could be updated. The beds were good and we were quite comfortable. The common room on the main floor had hot water and ice which was handy, it leads to a nice garden. The 2nd Floor breakfast room is nice and the common room beside it is charming. It was used in filming a "Law and Order" episode if you are a fan. There is a chapel where you can pray or celebrate Mass on some days. We would like to stay here again the next time we visit New York. |
| Charlotte Ford | 9/3/2009 | | Leo House is great value for money and in a brilliant location in Chelsea. We stayed here for almost 9 weeks after getting stranded in NYC after my partner's lung collapsed. We had a room on the 3 floor. It was simply decorated, clean and bright with A/C and private toilet, sink, t.v and phone. We had use of a shared bathroom and pretty much had it to ourselves. Staff made us feel really at home without being at all intrusive. We are not religious and we did not feel at all out of place at Leo House. We will always remember our stay fondly! Thank you! |
| Pat | 7/10/2009 | | Hello,
The Leo house is in a great location, easy access to sub-way, transit etc. The facility has freindly & helpful staff. The breakfst was good but didn't change much from day to day. We stayed in the ground floor family rooms which are rather dingy & not real clean. The rooms above ground seemed much better. I recommend above ground rooms (there are family rooms there too) that face the courtyard (much quieter). (July 09) |
| geraldo franco | 5/29/2009 | | Hi there. When I first arived in NYC is Sept. 1964 I was taken to Leo House by Jesuit's friends. My memories of it are few tough touching since it was my gateway to America: my first night spent there was at Leo House. Many surprises? Yes! They had a fallout shelter, for gods sake! And up in the roof a view to NYC harbour authority! And a morning coffea that looked like tea! That funny two store high berth you have to jump up to get into it... I hope you are all there, who knows, I may redraw my past footsteps, one of these days... Cheers Leo people! |
| irene marin | 4/12/2009 | | el mejor sitio donde me he alojado en nyc siempre esta en mi corazon me encanta quiero volver muchas veces mas..los empleados son amables limpieza 10 todo es perfecto gracias.. |
| Suzanne | 10/26/2008 | | My 11 year old daughter and I stayed at the Leo House for 16 days during the summer of 2007. She was attending a 2 week summer dance intensive at ABT. The room was small but spotless. Luckily, both of us are fairly neat people. The shower was right next door and we never had an issue with getting in there or any problems with the facilities. We were there 2 of the hottest weeks and when we would arrive back at Leo House after walking 6 blocks from ABT, it was great to step into our room, crank the air conditioning and have the room cool in a very short time. The breakfasts were excellent. 23rd Street is very noisy and used often by emergency vehicles. We were on the 4th floor facing the street. Leaving the fan running helps to alleviate some of the noise.
We would definitely stay there again. It is close to many subway stops (most lines having a stop along 23rd St.) After 2 weeks we were almost old hands at the subways.
Staff was always very helpful and very patient for explaining things to non NYC people. |
| Murray Lazelle | 10/18/2008 | | We live in New Zealand and have just returned from 8 nights at Leo House. If you want unbridled luxury this is not the place for you, but if you want a great location, friendly helpful staff and a great price this is a great option. The rooms are clean but basic (solid would be an appropriate description). We had a little trouble with a rattling airconditioner but otherwise it was a great stay. If you are sensitive about noise, many NY streets are very busy and the street noise is much more intrusive that what we would get travelling in NZ or in Oz, but the rooms at the back are fine. The $9 breakfasts were a great start to the day. Leo House is just 100m from a subway on the lines that go direct to the World Trade Centre or Brooklyn and much of central Manhatten is walkable from here. There are a good variety of restaurants in the area so you don't have to put up with stodge! This place has a nice atmosphere about it and we would not have any hesitation about staying there again. |
| Dora Holguin | 10/18/2008 | | My husband, me, and a friend stayed at the Leo House in 2006. The ambiance of this retreat house was that of gracious hospitality, cleanliness, and friendliness. We compared it to the comforts of a bed & breakfast inn with the extra amenities of a breakfast dining room, large guest room, outdoor garden, and a chapel. This was our first time to NYC and we were impressed with the proximity of the surrounding areas of interest to explore. One of these was only walking distance to the Chelsea Pier where we took an unforgettable dinner cruise on The Spirit of N.Y. around the harbor for our 35th anniversary. I strongly recommend this hospitality retreat house for their gracious living accomodations at a very reasonable rate. Many blessings to all at the Leo House! We hope to visit again next time in NYC. |
| Charmaine Wallace | 10/18/2008 | | The rooms are very clean and neat. The breakfast is excellent! Very warm and friendly atmosphere. Do plan to visit again at The Leo House. |
| Brenda Hallquist | 10/18/2008 | | I just returned from New York City and The Leo House. I appreciated the house and the location. My room was clean and neat, the breakfast was lovely and the street on which it is located is one of the most conveninet locations I can think of. I would definitely like to stay there again. |
| gina | 10/18/2008 | | I have fond memories of the Catholic Hostel, the Leo House. I Stayed here with my brother-in-law, we were in to see the David Letterman show. Old building, single beds with a private bathroom. It was peaceful, and what I remember most was the simplicity; there were PB & J sandwiches in the vending machines! |
| Robert Miller | 10/18/2008 | | A friend had suggested the Leo House to stay while in NYC. I loved it. Very accomodating. All, I mean all of the staff made you feel like family there.
Top notch in Chelsea

| Veronica Kelly | 10/18/2008 | | I stayed in Leo house 2006 Dec I loved it, I was really delighted to be able to attend Mass, it was a wonderful experience, I just went from my room up to the little church, I found it really clean tidy breakfast was a treat, and only problem I would have is the distance I had to walk to central Park where my daughter loves to ice skate, so long walk before going skateing but worth it, I just love the place, hope to get booked in this year in Dec, and then I will use the pubic transport to get round. Staff are very helpfull too! |
| Denis W | 5/5/2008 7:58:58 PM | | Without a doubt the best bargain hotel in lower Manhattan. The location is great, within easy walking distance to the Metro, Midtown and the Village. I've stayed there several times over the past 10 years. W23rd is a busy cross street so ask for a room in the rear, but requesting one is not a guarantee that you’ll get one. I have had mixed results with accommodations and the staff. Most staff are friendly and professional. But twice they have messed up my reservations, one time losing it completely. Be certain to get a reservation number after you’ve faxed in your request and be certain to confirm your reservation prior to arrival even if they claim you don’t need to confirm. The breakfast room is handy, a bargain, and well staffed. Rooms have been a mix of clean and neat to dingy and in need of a serious scrubbing, slow drains are common. They were renovating the building piecemeal a few years ago, it may be done by now. As long as you are not looking for luxurious accommodations then this is a great place to stay. |
| Kelly Hunter | 5/2/2008 6:23:07 PM | | My mother and I stayed here in May 2007 and aside from the hard beds, it was a very clean and safe feeling place.
It is in a great Chelsea location to the subway and bakeries.
The breakfast is unbelievably good and a great price.
We would definitely stay here again the next time we come back to NY. The price was $100 per night for two twin beds and a private bath. The room was small but who cares when it's the city to see, not the hotel room. |
| sarah fiodorova | 3/19/2008 8:15:25 AM | | I first stayed at Leo House in 2002. Me and my mum were impressed with its cleanliness, and also with the price!
When I returned to NYC in 2005 i made sure that i booked to stay at Leo House. Again, very clean and a very good price.
I would always recommend Leo House to visitors to NYC. |
| Cheryl Carroll | 3/7/2008 5:04:04 AM | | We stayed at Leo House in March 2002 with our youth group. It was the perfect place to take a youth group as far as price and very centrally located. The rooms are just what you need at the end of the day to rest your weary bones. Very close to the subway and walking distance to Broadway. I highly recommend it for Youth Groups. |
| Mary I | 2/14/2008 7:43:19 AM | | The Leo House staff is wonderful. I had cancer treatments in NYC several years ago and stayed there for two nights a week for 24 weeks. I continue to get check ups twice a year and always stay at the Leo House. The staff, particularly Lucy is so accomodating and compassionate. Very clean no frills environment and they have a particular fee schedule if a person is receiving medical treatment in NYC. Down the street are two great Spanish restaurants(one which serves lobsters in all sizes.)
There are two cinemas, one right across the stree from Leo House. The breakfast buffet is great(homemade muffins, quiche and all kinds of fruit in addition to the regular breakfast fare. It is open to the public, too. Very secure place in Chelsea. right next to the C train, too. |
| Nancy C. | 1/21/2008 10:20:06 AM | | I have family members that always stay there. I have lived in NY all my life but moved to FL in 2003. When I needed to come up north I stayed at the Leo House. It is a very safe place. Once it gets passed a certain time in the PM they have the doors locked and you have to ring the bell to get in. The food was great and the price was low. You can walk to Greenwich Village or midtown. As long as you don't want luxury this is the place to go. Also know that they only have window air conditioners so if you are a light sleeper just know it is a little noisy. |
| Donna Hull | 1/5/2008 1:30:11 PM | | When I was 16 a group of my classmates and I stayed at The Leo House while visiting from St.Lambert on the South Shore of Montreal. For many of us, this was our first time visiting New York. We felt safe, sheltered and protected. There is a something very special about The Leo House that has stayed with me over the years. I would recommend it wholeheartedly as a gracious, comfortable retreat. |
| Bonnie Bright | 12/30/2007 5:29:14 PM | | This is the safest, most comfortable and easy place to stay in the city. Hospitable and personal. Highly recommended to all. |
| Caroline | 11/19/2007 7:01:38 AM | | I only had the opportunity to stay at the Leo House one time several years ago, but it was an unforgettable experience. What I loved was the breakfast, (seems everyone has praise for it!), the opportunity to attend Mass, and the SECURITY. I remember that I could not even get inside the lobby after dark unless I had a room key, and my son was not allowed to come up to my room; I was called and asked to meet him in the lobby. I am hoping to stay again in 2008, but I am sad that the rates have gone up as much as they have. However, it is still a lot less expensive than any place else in NYC. |
| Jose F. Colon | 11/3/2007 1:40:29 PM | | Many years ago I stayed at Leo House with my aunt Panchita who passed away in 2002. Going back will undoubtedly bring back beautiful memories of the kindness and overall ambiance in the hospice. As a Catholic I thank Saint Martin of Porres, who died in a day like today for openning my mind and inspiring me to go back to this blessed place again. |
| Wendy Wood | 10/11/2007 11:43:46 AM | | I have stayed at the Leo House several times over the years and it is amazing. You can't believe a place like this exists anymore!!! So old-fashion and the breakfast buffet is yummy and so reasonable. You won't regret this cozy inn. |
| Mark Bakermans | 5/14/2007 2:17:28 AM | | This is a great alternative to expensive New York hotels. The Leo House has friendly staff, great breakfast buffet (at $7), and clean and comfortable rooms. Sharing a shower located in the hallway proved to be no problem. The rooms have a sink and toilet. Ideally situated in Chelsea, just 200 meters from a MTA station. We were there for seven nights and can thoroughly recommend Leo House. Thanks to the staff and sisters for their great welcome and hospitality. |
| Michelle | 4/24/2007 11:46:34 AM | | We heard about The Leo House through the parish priest. My three sisters and our Mother went to NYC to see our son/nephew/grandson's debut on Broadway and celebrate our Mother's 90th birthday.
We found The Leo House to be delightful and as neat as a pin. The staff was very courteous and concerned about our stay and well being. The brunch they offer for a nominal fee was beyond our imagination, you have to try the cinnamon rolls for sure.
Thanks to The Leo House our trip was affordable and terrific.
We would go back again and again and again. |
| Peter J. F. | 4/12/2007 12:10:42 PM | | Leo House deserves a high rating, not for its exquisite accommodations, but rather for their charm, cleanliness, friendliness, and it's central location. The rooms are quaint and basic - with private baths, they are dated and frayed round the edges though. I highly recommend a room with private bath facilities - a real step back in time though. Rooms are available with shared bathing facilities - located in the halls.
Breakfast is served daily except Sundays. It is fresh, varied and plentiful - staff are attentive and friendly. A real steal at $7. seconds are encouraged and there is more than enough food.
Leo House is centrally located(8th & W23rd) in Chelsea. They are situated close to local restaurants, bars, night clubs, museums, and public transportation (1/2 block to subway). Further afield, they are walking distance to many other attractions: Hell's Kitchen, Greenwich Village, Hudson River and Washington Square.
Leo House is definitely a quiet retreat - a real find you will never forget; and that is their charm. |
| Maureen Cheetham-Highsmith | 3/28/2007 5:21:44 AM | | We stayed here by default in 2002.I have posted a review on Tripadvisor so won't go into detail again here, suffice is to say that The Leo House is NYC's best kept secret and I'm happy for it to stay thay way!!! |
| Bob Stempin | 2/19/2007 5:08:43 PM | | I've stayed at The Leo House many times during the past several years. The staff and accomodations are top notch. The rooms are small but clean and inviting. The breakfast is not to be missed. It is like eating in your Grandmother's dining room. I can't say enough about the nice people who run The Leo House. God bless you! |
| Bill Berensmann | 2/10/2007 4:44:21 PM | | What a pleasure to discover that The Leo House continues to accommodate visitors to NYC. I stayed here every week for years over five years ago, and never had a negative experience. Rooms were always spotless, staff extremely courteous (especially the sister who operated the elevator),
and the value was unbeatable. Hope to return again soon.

| Scott a. howe | 1/17/2007 10:32:02 AM | | I thought this place was top notch! All the staff was professional, polite, and friendly. Very helpfull! The place was kept very clean and tidy!! Great breakfast buffet every day. I couldn't have stayed at a better place if I looked for months. It has a beautiful patio garden in the back yard, that's quiet, and secluded. Great place |
| Anne Pasternak | 9/24/2006 | | My daughter and I stayed at Leo House for 4 days. If I could rate the breakfast on its own, I would give it a 10! The pleasant woman who were behind the buffet, hot porridge just the right consistancy, always some fresh fruit and yorgurt to top it off. I tried to resist it, but I finally succumbed to a slice of a delicious brown raisin & nut loaf. The coffee was hot and delicious. The small room with white table cloths is charming and everyone seemed to be in a happy mood. What a way to start the day.
The rooms were kept spotless. The staff were indeed very helpful, helping us in many ways, the quickest way to get to where we wanted to go.
I was not overly excited about the shower being down the hall. At that time the water was not going down the drain fast enough, and it pooled around my feet. I should have reported it - but did not. I survived.
Nevertheless, I would return to Leo House if we go back to New York.
Sincerely, Anne |
| Phyllis Covington | 6/18/2006 | | I have stayed at the Leo House twice over the years. Your description here fits nicely. I remember the clean rooms and the bath down the hall which was shared. I felt safe there and got fed well in the dining room for breakfast. I enjoyed paying in 1989 less than $50 for my room with two twin beds.I still tell people about the Leo House for an inexpensive place in Manhattan. |
